Studio Lighting for Product and Still-Life

This is a 2 Session class – April 3rd at Samy’s Los Angeles Classroom from Noon - 4:00pm and April 10th at Smashbox Studios from 10:00am - 4:00pm
Class Fee: $175.00

Mastering the tools of lighting is the key to mastering studio photography. This class is a hands on workshop taught in a professional studio where students will gain first hand training in the language of light necessary for digital and film photography.

The emphasis is on choosing the proper light source and learning to modify it, control it and enhance the quality to match the photographer’s desired interpretation.

The class will include demonstrations of studio and natural lighting techniques along with the use of light meters, reflectors, fill flash, soft boxes, umbrellas, scrims, grids, snoots, flags, gobos and studio strobe. Each lighting tool has a purpose and knowing when to use each tool is essential to create dynamic images.

Concepts will be introduced that will show the participants how to create mood and drama in their images as well as the clean commercial look necessary for advertising clients.

Each participant will leave this workshop with a practical knowledge of studio lighting and the confidence necessary to control lighting in a studio environment.

Prior experience using off-camera flash and available light with reflectors is essential for this class. Students must have a DSLR or film camera capable of manual exposure settings and a hotshoe or sync connection.

Craig Mohr is a photography educator and photographer with over 30 years experience shooting Advertising, Catalogs and Annual Reports. He studied photography and film-making in college, but began his still photography career shooting catalogs for Southern California department stores.

His strong graphic style of lighting is most evident in the conceptual still-life work he created for his corporate clients. Most notably Farmers Insurance Group, Fox Broadcasting, Allergan, City National Bank and The Walt Disney Company.
Advertising clients have included K-Swiss, Vans, Sony Electronics and Kenwood USA.
As an educator Craig has been teaching photography since 1985. Starting at UCLA Extension where he first created a still life and product lighting class. He has also taught photo art direction, composition and digital photography at the Extension.
He is currently teaching studio lighting and B&W printing at Santa Monica College where he is an Associate Faculty member.
